What's Cooking?
Mary Rose's feature, "Farmers' Markets - Grass roots goodness beyond the grocery" reminds us that Summer is coming, and the Chicago farmers’ market season is about to burst onto the scene. To learn more about your local farmers' markets and how to shop them effectively or to try Mary Rose's Best bet recipe for grilled Plums with Mascarpone Topping, pick up an issue of the Quintessential Barrington magazine and turn to page 82.

Barrington Farmer’s Market Cooking Classes
Be sure to stop by the Barrington Farmer’s market to visit with Mary Rose and to watch some of her students participate in a cooking class under her tent. This is a great opportunity to learn how to incorporate the market into your lifestyle, enroll in future classes, book private events and also take home some helpful cooking tips. If you want to participate in a class under the tent or learn more about the class, click below or call Mary Rose.
Farmers’ Market Shopping Tips:
Here are some helpful hints to shop the market more effectively:
- Shop the market with an open mind and let the fresh bounty inspire you with ideas for an upcoming meal.
- Plan on shopping when the market opens, because it’s a bummer when all the peaches are gone! If you shop late, seek discounts while vendors are packing up their goods.
- Bring cash (small bills) and sturdy shopping bags to hold all your treasures. If you’re shopping far from home, be sure to pack a cooler to preserve fresh items and perishables.
- Make it a family event and bring the kids, because they’ll learn that tomatoes don’t always come in a shrink wrapped foam tray and fresh vegetables are not always available 24/7.
